Journal Entry   Back KENAI: Refuge Replaces Swanson River Area Public Cabin Alaska Region, August 23, 2005 Print Friendly Version Kenai National Wildlife Refuge staff completed construction of a new public use cabin in the Swanson River area of the Refuge. The 16' X 18' rustic log cabin is located at the far end of Dolly Varden Lake. The cabin replaces the Finger Lakes cabin which was destroyed by fire in recent years. The new location is more accessible to the visiting public and the cabin is most easily reached by a 20 minute canoe ride from the Refuge's Dolly Varden Lake Campground. The campground is along Swanson River Road about 12 miles from Sterling, Alaska. Two bunk beds, a table with benches, wood stove, shovel, bucket, broom, fire extinguisher, outside campfire ring, and outhouse are provided at the Dolly Varden Lake Cabin. The site, while readily accessible, provides seclusion and good opportunities for viewing of wildlife such as loons, trumpeter swans, and moose. Dolly Varden Lake offers fair to good fishing for rainbow trout and Arctic char. The cabin will be available for public use via advanced reservation after August 27, 2005.
