Journal Entry   Back KENAI: Refuge Constructs Environmental Education Classroom Alaska Region, July 15, 2005 Print Friendly Version Kenai National Wildlife Refuge has finished building a new environmental education classroom. Located near the Refuge's headquarters and visitor center site off Ski Hill Road in Soldotna, the 32' X 42' log building is designed to support year-round outreach and training needs of the Refuge. The building was largely completed via Refuge staff labor in just over two years for about $200,000. It is outfitted with learning materials ranging from animal skulls, to microscopes, to a state-of-the art video projection system. It seats up to 75 people and while it is primarily designed to support school groups, it has already served the Refuge well for holding public meetings, staff training exercises, and volunteer bear safety classes. The new classroom will help the Refuge achieve part of its Congressionally mandated purposes: to provide opportunities for scientific research, interpretation, environmental education, and land management training.
