KENAI: Fire Training Benefits Arctic Winter Games
Alaska Region, June 17, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Kenai National Wildlife Refuge joined with Chugach National Forest to co-host interagency wildland firefighter training at Skyview High School in Soldotna. Thirty-one students from State and Federal agencies successfully completed the four courses that make up the training. As part of the exercises, students formed fire crews and cleared 20,000 square feet of trees and brush from five new ski trails within the Tsalteshi Trails System. These trails will be critical to the international Arctic Winter Games to be held in the area in March 2006. Not only did the Games and trail system benefit from the exercise, the firefighter trainees also were exposed to incident briefings, crew and squad dynamics issues, communications practice, wildland firefighting tools use, and line construction techniques as part of the training exercises.
