Journal Entry   Back KENAI: Kenaitze Indian Tribe and Kenai Refuge Work Together to Save Historic Cabin Alaska Region, June 23, 2005 Print Friendly Version The Kenaitze Indian Tribe and Kenai National Wildlife Refuge signed a Memorandum of Agreement on June 23, 2005 for the management and interpretation of the Darien-Lindgren Historical Cabin. The historic log cabin currently sits as a partial ruin along the banks of the Kenai River within the Refuge in an area known as the Stepanka Tract. The area is the past site of a Denai'ina Athabascan Indian village and is rich in cultural history. Under the terms of the agreement, the Tribe and Refuge will work together to restore and relocate the cabin to a nearby road accessible public interpretive site where it will remain on long-term loan to the Tribe. The restoration and relocation is slated to begin in July 2005, but before the cabin is dismantled an archaeological survey of the site will be completed. This work will be performed by a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service archaeologist and Tribal youth and volunteers. The project will benefit the public who will be able to easily visit the restored cabin at the K'Beq Interpretive Site. It also will help protect fragile riverbanks and cultural resources from abuse where the cabin currently sits, while helping to promote Dena'ina cultural history long into the future.
