Journal Entry   Back KENAI: Fishing Walkways Open Early Alaska Region, June 3, 2005 Print Friendly Version Kenai National Wildlife Refuge announces the annual opening of the Moose Range Meadows Public Access Fishing Walkways. Three days of labor by Refuge staff completed the installation and maintenance of the popular elevated walkways nearly a month earlier than normally planned. Visitors may now enjoy the area longer, and attempt to catch trout, char, king salmon, and early run sockeye salmon on the Kenai River in June. The walkways, first installed in 2001, are removed each Fall to avoid ice damage during Spring break-up. The Moose Range Meadows Public Fishing Area was acquired and developed by the Refuge to help compensate for lost fishing opportunity where public access had been restricted because of urban development and because of efforts to protect approximately five miles of shoreline habitat critical to king salmon. Most historical use of the area has been for second run sockeye salmon fishing (July and early August); however, by opening the areas early, additional fishing opportunity has been created. Visitors may find the access areas off Redoubt and Keystone Drives on the north end of Soldotna, or may call the Refuge at (907) 262-7021 for additional information.
