KENAI: Employee Receives National Environmental Leadership Award
Alaska Region, May 3, 2005
Print Friendly Version
Nicole Johnson, a Park Ranger Environmental Education Specialist with Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, received a national Fish and Wildlife Service Environmental Leadership Award for her efforts in recycling and reaching out to Refuge staff and the public alike in fostering better environmental stewardship. Nicole coordinates the Refuge recycling program which in 2004 recycled 3,413 pounds of office products alone. Nicole has established collection areas in the main office, shop, bunkhouse, and fire office to store and separate everything from newspapers and aluminum cans to used batteries, scrap metal, and used oil. The Refuge's overall waste diversion rate is 41 percent. Additionally, Nicole has developed a variety of educational programs to help increase awareness and understanding of wildlife and the natural world, and how individuals can reduce their impacts on the environment. Nicole's award was one of only three such Environmental Leadership awards given nationally in 2005.
