Journal Entry   Back TETLIN: Hidden Lake Trail - Improved and Revealed Alaska Region, August 11, 2004 Print Friendly Version "Build It And They Will Come." This was the motto for the Hidden Lake Trail building project that began July 19, 2004 and ended on August 11, 2004. Through the group 'Wilderness Volunteers,' folks from across the United States teamed up with Tetlin NWR - volunteering their time and energy for a week long trail building project. The crew consisted of 10 volunteers (the youngest was 47 years old) and 5 Tetlin NWR staff members who built an elevated running plank trail over the wet muskeg areas of a one mile trail leading to the pristine waters of Hidden Lake. Over the years, foot travel and ATV use has left the trail too wet and muddy for comfortable hiking. Upon completion of the improved trail, road signs and a trail register were installed, as well as an interpretive bulletin board depicting the volunteer project. Hidden Lake Trail register has had 94 people sign-in since its installation in early August. Visitor comments express their appreciation for an easily accessible trail leading to a beautiful destination. People enjoy ideal wildlife viewing and fishing for stocked rainbow trout. An interpretive panel on beavers is being developed for the small platform at the lake's edge. And so the motto rings true...build it and they will come! Hidden Lake trail head is located at milepost 1240 along the Alaska Highway, just 11 miles west of Tetlin NWR visitor center.
