SELAWIK: Science and Native Culture Come Together

This week the Selawik National Wildlife Refuge and their partners are hosting a Culture?Science Camp for the students of Selawik, an Inupiaq village located within the refuge boundaries. The camp was started as a challenge cost share grant in 2003. The Fish and Wildlife Service joined with the Native Village of Selawik, residents, the Northwest Arctic Borough School District and the NANA Corporation to give students the opportunity to learn about whitefish ecology and the special role fish play in their subsistence lifestyle. After learning about fish biology from Research Biologists working on the refuge, students gain hands on experience processing fish using traditional techniques taught by the community's elders. This wonderful blend of activities and sponsors demonstrates how western technology and traditional knowledge can be combined to help the region's youth gain a new appreciation of the area's special resources. The week will end with a community potluck featuring whitefish caught and processed by the students.
