ALASKA MARITIME: Refuge Biologist Receives Department Honors
Alaska Region, July 3, 2004
Print Friendly Version
G. Vernon Byrd, Supervisory Biologist for the Alaska Maritime National Wildlife Refuge, was presented the Department of Interior's Meritorious Service Award by Deputy Secretary Stephen Griles during the official dedication of the refuge's new headquarters at the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center in Homer. Mr. Byrd has had a distinguished career spanning more than 30 years with the Fish and Wildlife Service. He has worked on seabirds, marine mammals, waterfowl, and endangered and threatened species on five refuges in Alaska, and he currently oversees one of the largest biological programs in the National Wildlife Refuge System. Mr. Byrd has developed scientifically credible protocols for monitoring seabird population trends and productivity, fostered numerous national and international partnerships, leveraged federal dollars with various grants and cost share opportunities, and achieved a high publication rate. Mr. Byrd's leadership and scientific expertise in invasive species management led to the successful re-colonization of many islands in Alaska by migratory birds, most notably the once endangered Aleutian Canada goose. Mr. Byrd's impressive understanding of complex ecological processes and extraordinary skill in articulating management strategies for wildlife conservation has contributed extensively to national policy for the NWRS. The Meritorious Service Award is the Department's second highest honor award granted during an employee's career for notable contributions.
