AK PENINSULA: Lights, Camera, Salmon!
Alaska Region, June 17, 2004
Print Friendly Version
The landmark Big Creek Video Monitoring Study, developed by the Fisheries program's King Salmon Fish and Wildlife Field Office, went live at the Interagency King Salmon Visitor Center on Thursday, June 17th. Visitors to the Center are now treated to live video of salmon passing through the fish weir on Big Creek. In addition to seeing live video, visitors can adjust the camera's view to follow fish and explore the viewing area by simply moving a computer mouse. This exhibit was created through collaboration among the Service's Fisheries and Refuge programs, the National Park Service, and the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. Remote video monitoring benefits both the Fisheries program and visitors by allowing people to see salmon in their natural environment while improving the accuracy, efficiency, and cost effectiveness of fish counting.
