KENAI: Agreement Reached on Collaborative Land Management
Alaska Region, May 6, 2004
Print Friendly Version
Regional Director Rowan Gould signed a memorandum of understanding on May 6 for the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge to help initiate a collaborative forest, wildfire protection, and fuels treatment program on the Kenai Peninsula. Other signatories include leaders from the U.S. Forest Service, State of Alaska, Bureau of Land Management, Kenai Fjords National Park, Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the Kenai Peninsula Borough. The agreement, which has become known as the "All Hands and All Lands" effort, recognizes the need to address long-term forest management needs in the aftermath of many years of spruce bark beetle impacts to the Kenai Peninsula. The Refuge alone has over 400,000 acres of beetle-killed spruce forest.
