Polar Bear Status Review

The status review (pdf) is intended to provide information serving as the basis for the Fish and Wildlife Service’s decision on whether or not to list the polar bear as a threatened or endangered species across all or a significant portion of its range under the Endangered Species Act.

The Service requested information from all concerned parties on the biology and status, including possible threats, of polar bears throughout their range.
The service provided a 90 day comment period
June 19, 2006 to August 31, 2006 is the estimated date for peer review
The Service provided a draft of the Polar Bear Status Review to 12 experts (pdf) in the field of polar bear biology, climatology, toxicology and/or traditional ecological knowledge for comment.
