Polar Bear Status Review
About the document
- The status review (pdf) is intended to provide information serving as the basis for the Fish and Wildlife Service’s decision on whether or not to list the polar bear as a threatened or endangered species across all or a significant portion of its range under the Endangered Species Act.
About the peer review process
- The Service requested information from all concerned parties on the biology and status, including possible threats, of polar bears throughout their range.
- The service provided a 90 day comment period
- June 19, 2006 to August 31, 2006 is the estimated date for peer review
- The Service provided a draft of the Polar Bear Status Review to 12 experts (pdf) in the field of polar bear biology, climatology, toxicology and/or traditional ecological knowledge for comment.
