Fire Management

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has an active fire management program in Alaska. We recognize that wildland fires are ecologically important on many of the 16 National Wildlife Refuges in Alaska. We also recognize that unwanted wildfires require suppression action. We may use prescribed fires to improve habitats and maintain fire in our ecosystems. We may also use prescribed fires and mechanical treatments to reduce hazards in flammable vegetation to help protect private lands and communities adjacent to National Wildlife Refuges. All of our actions are based on local or regional plans, and support the goals of the National Fire Plan
