EPA works with foreign governments and international organizations to solve environmental problems of mutual concern. Such concerns include the protection of shared ecosystems, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, the arrest of further destruction of the ozone layer, the protection of human and environmental health from toxic chemicals and the enhancement of worldwide capacity for environmental protection efforts. This cooperation is often formalized in treaties and agreements. Recent important international accords signed by the United States include The Arctic Military Cooperation Program, The Border Environment Cooperation Commission, The Maripol Agreement and individual treaties with Mexico, Canada, Japan and Taiwan.
