American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009

On February 17, 2009, President Obama signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Recovery Act). On March 3, 2009, President Obama and Vice President Biden joined USDOT Secretary LaHood in announcing that $26.6 billion of this funding was available to the States for highway investment.

Since then, the Federal Highway Administration has worked diligently to ensure that the agency, with our many partners and stakeholders, was ready to advance the Recovery Act projects that will put America back to work by making needed investments in America's infrastructure. Within hours of the President's announcement, states began approving projects -- and in full compliance with all Federal laws and regulations.

Less than two months after the funding was made available, more than 2,600 projects have been approved, committing more than one-third of the available funding. Hundreds of projects have already begun and, by summer, work will be under way in every state in the country.

The Federal Highway Administration has moved forward aggressively to fulfill the President's commitment to transparency and accountability for Recovery Act funds. Data on our progress is updated daily on our Home Page, and detailed reports are being provided through the Recovery.gov website. We are implementing a Recovery Act risk management plan to guide our oversight of these funds and to ensure that they are being spent appropriately.

This web page contains comprehensive information on our Recovery Act efforts, including funding distributions and requirements, answers to frequently asked questions, presentations and guidance materials, and training. We will continue to update it as new information becomes available. If you have any questions, please contact Bob Bini at robert.bini@dot.gov.
