The Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument was established in 1988 by Congress to “preserve outstanding paleontological resources for present and future generations” and is managed by the National Park Service. This unique site contains the largest concentration of fossil horses in North America and contains the world’s richest known fossil deposits from the late Pliocene Epoch (3.5 million years ago), which include 105 vertebrate species, 38 invertebrate species, and 35 plant species. It is most known for Idaho’s state fossil, the Hagerman horse (closely related to Grevy’s zebra of Africa).

Directions

From 1-84 North, take the first Bliss exit (#137) and travel approximately 2 miles to the turn off for Highway 30 on the right. Travel 8 miles south on Highway 30 to the town of Hagerman. The Visitor Center is on your left. 

From I- 84 South, take the second exit # 155, (Wendell/Hagerman). Travel 10 miles to the intersection of Highway 30. Make a right onto Highway 30 and travel north approximately 2 miles. The Visitor Center is on your right. Parking is available in front of the Visitor Center, behind the Visitor Center, off Reed Street, or at the Town Park, one block north of the Visitor Center.
