Step 1 of 3: Disclaimer

Please read carefully.

The Healthy School Environments Assessment Tool has been developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to assist states and school districts in conducting basic self-assessments of the status of environmental and other hazards in each of its school facilities. This is a voluntary tool that may be used by states, school districts, and others as they deem appropriate. The tool is intended to be customized before use to reflect state and local requirements and policies. Content provided with the tool reflects only EPA recommendations on the most important topics and subtopics that should be assessed by school districts.

Content provided with the assessment tool is intended solely as guidance on federal voluntary programs and federal requirements.  Users should consult with their states for state-specific requirements. Any variation between applicable regulations and the information provided in this document is unintentional, and, in the case of such variations, the requirements of the regulations govern. It should NOT be considered to be a complete list of all of the requirements to which a school district or school may be subject.

The assessment tool and its contents do not constitute rulemaking by EPA and may not be relied upon to create a substantive or procedural right or benefit enforceable at law or in equity, by any person. EPA, states, and school districts may take action at variance with the assessment tool contents.

The assessment tool also identifies governmental and non-governmental resources that may be helpful to the broad schools community. EPA does not make any guarantee or assume any liability with respect to either the use of any information or recommendation made by these resources. The use of non-governmental resources provided in the assessment tool is not to be viewed as an endorsement of these resources by EPA.

Although every effort has been made to reflect the most current guidance and regulations as of the date of the version on the assessment tool, compliance with all Federal, state and local laws and regulations remains the sole responsibility of the individual schools or districts subject to those laws and regulations.
