Barrett Beach/Talisman is one of the narrowest parts of Fire Island. It's an easy walk from the drop-off dock to the oceanside beach or to the small picnic area on the calmer bayside beach. A short boardwalk trail through the forest provides relief from the sun.
The Barrett Beach dock includes a floating dock that provides for unloading and loading. Local boaters can access the popular bay-side Talisman picnic area from this pier.
The Barrett Beach/Talisman area is located near the center of Fire Island National Seashore. It is across the Great South Bay from Bayport and Sayville, Long Island. At this time, it is only accessible by private boat and foot, and by charter ferry service from Patchogue or Sayville. (See Barrett Beach/Talisman Hours.)
Barrett Beach/Talisman offers a dock for boaters to load and unload only, a boardwalk trail leading across the island to the ocean beach, restrooms, and a picnic area.
The setting sun over Barrett Beach casts long shadows on this quiet stretch of beach.

Horseshoe crabs come near shore on the full moon in May and June to lay thousands of eggs, which are a valuable food source for migrating shorebirds in spring and early summer. Occasionally, a perfectly-formed horseshoe crab molt can be found on the beach, shed as the young animal grows.
