Benthic Invertebrates

Gastropoda - Snails

Physidae - sinistral pond snails

Previous - Lymnaeidae
Browse Gastropod Families
Next - Planorbidae

Due to the lack of distinctive shell characters, the taxonomy of the Physid group both at the
species and generic level has been unstable. Recent studies indicate that the number of biological species of physids has probably been overestimated by an order-of-magnitude due to phenotypic plasticity. Color varies as much within as between species.
