Record Highs for Southwest Kansas (August 5, 2008)
Temperatures soared well above 100 degrees across parts of Southwest Kansas Monday afternoon. Both the Dodge City and Garden City Regional Aiports established new records. Dodge City topped out at 108 degrees which broke the previous record of 104 degrees set back in 1945 and tied in 2002. Records for Dodge City date back to 1875. Garden City reached 105 degrees which broke the record of 104 degrees set in 1954. Ashland and a location 16 miles southeast of Wilmore reached 109 degrees. The temperature at Lakin topped out at 106.
A few locations near the Oklahoma border should top out over 100 degrees again today. The heat wave that began on July 20th will be coming to an end as relatively cooler weather settles into southwest Kansas through the remainder of the week. Temperatures should be closer to normal.
