USGS Provides Water-Quality Information in a Format Compatible with EPA

The USGS water-quality web services produce data formatted according to the Water Quality Exchange (WQX) Outbound XML schema, which has been developed collaboratively by EPA and USGS.

The USGS Water-quality Web Service qwwebservices.usgs.gov is an automated data access method for retrieving recent and historical USGS water-quality data collected by both EPA and USGS investigations around the country.

Both the USGS and EPA source database systems contain vast amounts of information making the data merging process often cost prohibitive in data interpretations.

A web service was developed as a computer-to-computer protocol that allows for the direct sharing of information. The services provide the foundation to combine data from USGS's NWIS and EPA's STORET systems using a common data format.

Scientific Investigations Report 2008-5235 Flood of June 2008 in Southern Wisconsin Go to project website » In June 2008, heavy rain caused severe flooding across southern Wisconsin. This report provides flood-peak inundation maps and water-surface profiles generated for nine communities in a geographic information system by combining flood high-water marks with available 1-10-meter resolution digital-elevation-model data. The flood maps and profiles outline the extent and depth of flooding through the communities and are being used in ongoing (as of November 2008) flood response and recovery efforts by local, county, State, and Federal agencies.

Open-File Report 2008-1277 Environmental Settings of Selected Streams Sampled for Mercury in Oregon, Wisconsin, and Florida, 2002–06 From 2002-2006, the U.S. Geological Survey National Water-Quality Assessment Program conducted studies investigating mercury biogeochemistry and food-web bioaccumulation in 8 streams from 3 distinct geographic areas of the United States. These streams varied greatly in environmental characteristics, including land-cover, hydrologic, climatic, and chemical characteristics. This report summarizes the environmental settings of these 8 streams.
