Denali National Park and Preserve is seeking applications from visual
artists for the 2004 Artist-in-Residence Program. Entries must be
postmarked by January 31, 2004. Notification of selection will be
made by March 15, 2004. This is the third season for the program,
which offers professional artists the opportunity to pursue their
work amidst Denali’s natural splendors. This past season’s artists
were painter David Mollet of Fairbanks, fabric artist Rebecca Voris
and sculptor Rachelle Dowdy, both from Anchorage. “We are pleased
to be able to provide the opportunity for artists to seek inspiration
from Denali National Park and Preserve” said Superintendent Paul
Anderson. “Their work will inspire others and help increase awareness
of the natural wonders of this special place”. Artists reside in
the historic East Fork cabin, located 43 miles into the park, for
10-day periods from mid-June through mid-September. In return for
their residency, artists agree to donate a piece of their original
park-related artwork to the park for the benefit and enjoyment of
visitors. Artists also present at least one public program during
their residency, which may take the form of a slide lecture, demonstration
or workshop. Application information is available on the park website
at www.nps.gov/dena/home/visitorinfo/programs/artist.html
or by contacting the Superintendent’s Office at (907) 683-9581.
