The sixth annual Susitna Community
Earth Day Celebration will take place on Saturday, April 22, from
11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Upper Susitna Senior Center, located
at Mile 98.5 on the Parks Highway, just south of the junction with
the Talkeetna Spur Road. This years theme is Sharing
Solutions for a Sustainable World.
Volunteers from the local communities, representatives from area
organizations, and staff from the Matanuska-Susitna Borough, Upper
Susitna Soil and Water Conservation District, and the National Park
Service will offer a wide variety of exhibits, hands-on activities,
and opportunities to learn about sustainable living practices, water
quality, invasive plant species, wildland fire safety, and many
other topics. Event participants will have the opportunity to recycle
and reuse in a variety of ways, including a recycled art contest
and a book, clothing, and sports gear exchange.
In addition, the event will showcase presentations by Verna Pratt,
from the Alaska Native Plant Society, and the Bird Treatment and
Learning Center in Anchorage, who will be showing two owls. There
will be plenty of childrens activities, including quests and
an art table.
