Research Project:
Characterization of Wireworm Resistance in Unique Potato Germplasm Derived from Solanum Berthaultii and S. Etuberosum
Location: Aberdeen, Idaho
Project Number: 5366-21000-026-02
Project Type:
Specific Cooperative Agreement
Start Date: Sep 04, 2007
End Date: Jun 30, 2009
Objective:
Objectives of this research are the characterization of the mechanisms conferring wireworm resistance in unique potato germplasm derived from the wild potato species S. etuberosum and S. berthaultii.
Approach:
Whole tubers of wireworm resistant and susceptible breeding clones will be used to determine a susceptibility index, defined as number of successful penetrations in relation to the number of attempts. We hypothesize that resistant clones will present more unsuccessful larval penetrations. Larval weight before and after the experiment will also be evaluated and higher weight increase will be considered an indication of acceptability among the different clones.
