Encouraging Innovation: Green Chemistry and Green Engineering
The Pollution Prevention Act provided an opportunity for EPA to devise creative strategies to protect human health and the environment and encourage innovation within the business sector. This led to the creation of EPA's green chemistry and green engineering programs. EPA Region 2 is promoting P2 and environmental stewardship in the pharmaceutical manufacturing sector through the implementation of green chemistry and green engineering concepts and tools. The phamaceutical industry has a significant presence in EPA Region 2, particularly in New Jersey and Puerto Rico. The Region's efforts ultimately aim to contribute to raising P2 awareness within one of its most viable industrial sectors -- drug development and manufacturing -- thereby creating a more sustainable sector, a healthier environment, and greater business success.
