Journey of Problem Solving: Anza Trail Segment in San Juan Bautista, California - 4th grade
Learn about the 1775-76 Anza Expedition on this recreation section of the Anza Trail. Lessons include trail activities, as well as pre- and post-site visit activities. (Lessons can be adapted for other outdoor areas).
Free props are available for this self-guided field trip by reserving at San Juan Bautista State Historic Park (reservation form). Selected prop-making materials are in the "Lesson Two - Selected Props" link below.

Journey of Problem Solving: San Juan Bautista State Historic Park - 4th grade
Extend your experience by taking a self-guided field trip to the state park. Learn about the layers of history revealed by the buildings and exhibits. Use the lessons below to focus your student's learning.
Make a reservation to visit the state park by calling Reserve America (866) 240-4655. It is free, but required when groups want to visit the park. Or you could reserve a state park program for a fee.

Did You Know?
Juan Bautista de Anza, who established the Anza Trail, led 300 settlers up the California coast in 1775. They experienced a 3 minute earthquake one day. Another day they saw crude oil bubbling out of the ground and found more oil on the beach as it bubbled up and washed ashore.
