International Transmission Company
(PESP Partner since June 2005)
Edison Electric Institute member
International Transmission Company (ITC) is the nation's first fully independent, for-profit electric transmission business. Their facilities include approximately 2,500 circuit miles of overhead and underground transmission lines; 13,500 towers and poles; and 28 connecting stations serving a population of approximately 4.9 million people.
ITC strives to be best-in-class as a transmission energy delivery business and this philosophy extends to their stewardship of the environment. They have instituted an integrated vegetation management (IVM) program to use a combination of techniques to manage for plant species compatible with their service to the public. Threshold levels of control are established by trained arborists that plan work equipped with GIS mapping computers that mesh geographic information related to facilities and land owners/users. This allows them to establish vegetation management partnerships with public agencies and conservation organizations to improve habitat for birds and other wildlife while maintaining safe and reliable electric service. The PESP goal of lowering the leve of risk to humans and the environment reinforces their corporate philosophy.
