Geodetic Survey

SCGS has created two custom databases for use in Garmin personal navigation receivers.  By loading one of these files on your receiver you will be able to navigate to the control point of your choice using all the navigation features of your particular model.  If you are interested in the nearest control points, the receiver will display the nearest 50 points once you have selected the Customized Points of Interest file.  You may also spell out the control point name.  A complete spelling is not required but the search time will decrease with a more complete spelling.

The files are in a special Garmin format for use as Customized Points of Interest.  You must have an SD Card of sufficient size to hold the data base.  SCGS is using a 2GB card.  The file containing all the control in South Carolina is approximately 800Mbytes.  .

On the Garmin 360, the Customized Points of Interest menu will be displayed in the “Where To” then select “my Locations” then the “Custom POIs” menu.  On the Garmin 200 you must locate the “Extra Points” menu.

SCGS has tested these files on its Garmin 200 and 360 units successfully.

The first file "Stations.csv" contains all the survey control for South Carolina. There are approximately 22,500 points in this database.  This dataset contains control points whether or not the latest description indicates that mark may have been destroyed.  This data set is most useful in counties that do not have a significant number of GPS control points

The second file "GPScontrol.csv" contains only control points that were described as “GPSable” the last time they were recovered.  This database contains approximately 7500 control points and is the most reliable as far as quality and usability are concerned.  There may be some points in this database that were not successfully recovered the last time they were searched for.

In order to load either of these files on your Garmin receiver you will need to download free software from the following Garmin site.

The instructions on its use are self-explanatory.

Caution, should you decide to delete this in the future, you will lose your “Favorites” as well.

Geodetic and Mapping Services works cooperatively to provide current geodetic information and modern land information systems.  The primary mission of the Geodetic Survey is to establish horizontal and vertical geodetic control throughout the state to allow land and land-related items to be referenced to the national horizontal and vertical coordinate system, to ensure the integrity of new geodetic data, and to maintain geodetic files.  Mapping Coordination supports the development of an accurate, uniform statewide mapping system on a county-by-county base.  These mapping systems will provide a large-scale map base for county and state land information systems that will enhance land records, engineering, land planning and economic development.

StationView™ (affectionately known as WINGRITS in SC) is a feature packed Windows® application designed to provide rapid access to the Horizontal and Vertical control stations maintained by the National Geodetic Survey.
