Larry J. Gabric has been appointed meteorologist-in-charge of the NOAA National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office in Greenville-Spartanburg, S.C. Gabric replaces Joseph Pelissier who retired on April 30, 2005. The Greenville-Spartanburg office is one of 122 local National Weather Service offices in the nation, and one of 23 in the National Weather Service Eastern Region. NOAA is the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

As meteorologist-in-charge, Gabric will be responsible for ensuring the citizens in upstate South Carolina, western North Carolina, along with portions of the state of Georgia, receive timely and accurate weather warnings and forecasts, as well as climate and water information. His responsibilities also include maintaining close working relationships with National Weather Service partners, including the emergency management community and the media, and providing severe weather awareness, preparedness and safety education for the public.

Gen. David L. Johnson, director of NOAA's National Weather Service. “We are proud to have Larry Gabric serving in this important role.”

For the last six years, Gabric has been the meteorologist-in-charge at the National Weather Service Weather Forecast Office in Caribou, Maine. He successfully led the efforts in Caribou to build the office into a full service-forecasting center since 1999. Prior to that, he was the warning coordination meteorologist in Cleveland Ohio. Gabric also served as a forecaster at National Weather Service offices in Lubbock, Texas; Raleigh, N.C.; Ann Arbor, Mich., and Jackson, Ky. He is a native of Green, Ohio.

Gabric is a graduate of Florida State University with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Math and Penn State University with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Meteorology. He also served as an officer in the United States Air Force and Air National Guard where he reached the rank of Major.
