NOAA AWARDS $2.6 MILLION TO SUPPORT COASTAL ZONE MANAGEMENT IN NEW YORK

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration awarded a $2.6 million grant to the New York State Department of State for administration of its Coastal Zone Management Program.

The grant will support the state’s federally approved management plan, which covers New York’s 2,625 miles of coast. The New York CZMP balances the demands of industries such as tourism, fishing and shipping with the need to protect the long-term health of the environment. It also provides programs to better manage marine and coastal habitat resources, wildlife habitat protection, floods and erosion control throughout the state. In addition, the New York CZMP gives grants to local governments in the coastal area to support coastal protection as well as development of local land use plans.

“Coastal areas host over 50% of the total U.S. population within only 17% of the nation’s land area,” said retired Navy Vice Adm. Conrad C. Lautenbacher, Ph.D., undersecretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator. “The complex needs and concerns created by this population are enormous, and it is crucial that experts have the resources that they need to make informed decisions regarding coastal areas.”

NOAA leaves day-to-day management decisions regarding coastal management at the state level in the 34 states and territories with federally-approved CZMPs.The Coastal Zone Management Program is a federal-state partnership dedicated to comprehensive management of the nation’s coastal resources, ensuring their protection for future generations while balancing competing national economic, cultural and environmental interests. The CZMP is authorized by the Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972 and administered at the federal level by the Coastal Programs Division within NOAA.

Each year, NOAA awards approximately $900 million in grants to members of the academic, scientific, education, and business communities to assist the agency in fulfilling its mission to study the Earth’s natural systems in order to predict environmental change, manage ocean resources, protect life and property, and provide decision makers with reliable scientific information. NOAA goals and programs reflect a commitment to these basic responsibilities of science and service to the nation for the past 35 years.
