EDITORS AND CORRESPONDENTS

In response to numerous inquiries and requests, the 60-page technical summary of the recently completed Driver Fatigue and Alertness Study is now available.

The document (Publication No. PR 97-129688) may be ordered from the National Technical Information Service, 5285 Port Royal Road, Springfield, Virginia 22161 (telephone: 703-487-4650 or, for rush orders, 800-553-6347). The price is $10 for microfiche or $21.50 for paper, plus shipping and handling.

The study was a seven-year partnership among the U.S. Department of Transportation, Transport Canada and the Trucking Research Institute of the American Trucking Associations Foundation. Eighty drivers were observed during runs totaling 4,000 hours and covering nearly a quarter of a million miles. The study provides extensive information on the alertness, driving performance and physiological and subjective states of commercial drivers as they operated revenue-generating runs.

Sincerely yours,

George L. Reagle
Associate Administrator for Motor Carriers
