Darin Figurskey has been appointed meteorologist-in-charge of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National Weather Service Forecast Office in Raleigh, North Carolina. Figurskey replaces Stephen Harned, who recently retired. The Raleigh office is one of 122 NWS Weather Forecast Offices in the nation and one of 23 in the NWS Eastern Region. NOAA is part of the U.S. Department of Commerce. As meteorologist-in-charge, Figurskey will be responsible for ensuring the citizens in North Carolina receive timely and accurate weather warnings and forecasts as well as climate and water information. His responsibilities also include maintaining close working relationships with NWS partners including the emergency management community and the media – and providing severe weather awareness, preparedness and safety education for the public. “A meteorologist-in-charge is the front line officer carrying out the National Weather Service mission of serving the American public by helping protect lives and property," said retired Air Force Brig. Gen. David L. Johnson, director of NOAA’s National Weather Service. “We are honored to have Darin Figurskey serving in this important role.” For the past three years, Figurskey was the meteorologist-in-charge of the Weather Forecast Office in Buffalo, New York, and credited as the regional leader for Congressional outreach activities in the area. His 15 years of NWS experience include being the warning coordination meteorologist and lead forecaster at the Weather Forecast Office in Detroit, Mich. He was also general forecaster at the Weather Forecast Office in Lubbock, Texas. In 2003, he was a member of the Hurricane Isabel Assessment. “Darin has done an outstanding job as meteorologist-in-charge of the Weather Forecast Office in Buffalo. His experience makes him well prepared to continue the excellent relationships that were developed by the Weather Forecast Office in Raleigh with North Carolina State University and the state of North Carolina,” said Dean Gulezian, NWS Eastern Region director. A native of southeast Michigan, Darin graduated from the University of Michigan in 1989 with a bachelor of science in engineering and meteorology.
