NOAA Awards More Than $1.5 Million To Oregon State University For Fishery Research

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration granted $1,560,013 to Oregon State University to fund research in West Coast fisheries. NOAA is an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce.

The grant will support West Coast fisheries research on the effects of ocean variability and the physical and biological processes that influence salmon and groundfish. Projects will include studies on the fish’s productivity, distribution, growth, health and marine survival. Other projects will perform scientific investigations of the causal relationships between ecosystem structure and ocean habitat, climate and human activities, particularly in estuaries and coastal regions of the U.S. Pacific Northwest.

“Funding from this NOAA grant will provide fishery managers with the information they need to make sound decisions regarding local marine resources,” said retired Navy Vice Adm. Conrad C. Lautenbacher, Ph.D., under secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator. “This grant allows the state of Oregon to manage its coastal resources while actively supporting NOAA and the Bush Administration’s commitment to the environment.”

Each year, NOAA awards approximately $900 million in grants to members of the academic, scientific and business communities to assist the agency in fulfilling its mission to study the Earth’s natural systems in order to predict environmental change, manage ocean resources, protect life and property, and provide decision makers with reliable scientific information. NOAA’s goals and programs reflect a commitment to these basic responsibilities of science and service to the nation for the past 34 years.
