NOAA Awards More Than $12.8 Million To The California Department Of Fish And Game To Support Salmon Recovery

NOAA AWARDS MORE THAN $12.8 MILLION TO THE CALIFORNIA DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND GAME TO SUPPORT SALMON RECOVERY

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration awarded a $12,869,834 grant to the California Department of Fish and Game to help fund salmon recovery efforts in California. NOAA is an agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce.

Funding from this grant will be used to award smaller grants to public and private groups for work to restore salmon populations in California coastal drainages in all parts of the state. The grant, part of the Pacific Coastal Salmon Recovery Fund, was created by Congress in 2000 to provide critically needed assistance to the West coast states and Tribes as participants in growing salmon recovery efforts in the region. Earlier this year, the Bush Administration announced a $10 million increase for the fund in the President’s FY 2005 budget request, totaling $100 million.

“The Pacific Coastal Salmon Recovery Fund has played a significant and valuable role in regional efforts to improve in-stream and riparian salmon habitat on the Pacific coast,” said retired Navy Vice Adm. Conrad C. Lautenbacher, Ph.D., under secretary of commerce for oceans and atmosphere and NOAA administrator. “This is another example of the Bush Administration’s strong commitment to species conservation and environmental stewardship.”

Each year, NOAA awards approximately $900 million in grants to members of the academic, scientific and business communities to assist the agency in fulfilling its mission to study the Earth’s natural systems in order to predict environmental change, manage ocean resources, protect life and property, and provide decision makers with reliable scientific information. NOAA’s goals and programs reflect a commitment to these basic responsibilities of science and service to the nation for the past 34 years.
