Moscow Clinic Offers Free HIV Rapid Testing
On December 1, 2008, USAID/Russia Mission Director Skip Waskin visited a partially USAID-funded private clinic in Moscow for groups at highest risk of HIV infection. Run by the Russian organization SANAM, the clinic offered free HIV rapid testing and counseling on World AIDS Day.
SANAM’s Director, Sergey Dubovsky, and one of the clinic’s HIV counselors discussed the clinic’s outreach work with at-risk groups, including commercial sex workers, men who have sex with men, and injecting drug users. Also discussed was SANAM's new partnership with a government-sponsored clinic in the PEPFAR target region of Orenburg, which is designed to replicate the successful approach pioneered by the Moscow clinic.
SANAM has reached over 7,000 people from at-risk populations with HIV prevention messages, and 1,500 people have received testing, counseling and treatment for sexually transmitted infections and HIV at the Moscow clinic.
