USAID Partner Community in RFE Wins Quality of Life Contest
Topolevo, one of 16 communities receiving funding through USAID’s Community Development Support Program (CDSP), recently won first prize in a national contest for rural municipalities on healthy environment and quality of life. Leveraged by donations from local businesses, USAID support for the Topolevo CDSP project resulted in changes to the public transportation scheme which yielded a 45 percent reduction in bus emissions; the installation of a new solar-powered lighting system which will save 30 megawatt hours annually; the development of new sports facilities which local police credit with a 25 percent drop in crime among youth; and, a three-fold increase in citizen volunteer service to 15 percent of the total population. Topolevo is located near Khabarovsk in the Russian Far East.
A new round of CDSP grant proposals to communities in Khabarovskiy Krai and Primorskiy Krai is underway.
