Primorskiy Kray Requests Trafficking, Domestic Violence Training

At a June 2007 meeting, a government commission established to combat human trafficking and domestic violence in Primorskiy Kray, Russia, called upon law enforcement agencies and the tourism board to invite NGOs to organize trainings for their staff. This decision resulted from the efforts of Svetlana Bazhenova, Far East Director of the USAID-funded “Path to Success!” Program, which builds on and strengthens social partnerships among NGOs, mass media, educational institutions, and local authorities to conduct trainings, implement information and public awareness raising activities and to introduce values-based educational and empowerment programs to prevent human trafficking and domestic violence.

The NGO trainings will be designed to assist Kray administration staff in identifying human trafficking and domestic violence cases. A commission working group, chaired by the Kray Vice Governor, will develop anti-violence and anti-trafficking informational campaigns and explore opening a local crisis center for women.
