Fall Prevention

Falls are one of the main disabling conditions of the elderly. One of the important consequences of falls is fracture which may have significant impact on elder's functioning, independence and quality of life. Fractures also have significant impact to carers, health care services and the society as a whole.

Exercise, home modification and use of appropriate walking aids can help in preventing fall of elderly. Participation in exercise also help to prevent fall. For example, proper posture and balance exercise can improve balance, stretching and strengthening exercise can prevent muscle weakness and protect the joint. Tai Chi is especially good. Its focus is on body flexibility, stability and slow movement, and it helps to strengthen muscle, train endurance, stretch the muscle, improve balance and mobility. It involves the whole body joints and muscle movement. Regular and correct practice of Tai Chi can reduce the risk of falls. Below are some other tips to prevent fall:

1. Clutter in the walkways Always keep the walkway clear
2. Oil or water spills on the floor Wipe all spills immediately
3. Loose rugs Replace with non-slip rugs
4. Poor lighting
  • Maintain adequate lighting
  • A night light or bedside light to avoid fall at night
5. Accidental fall on rising from bed due to high bed height
  • Select suitable bed height to ensure that the feet can reach the floor when sitting
  • Avoid sleeping on the upper deck of double-deck bunk bed
6. Chairs with wheels Use stable chairs with suitable seat height
7. Tripping on loose clothing and slippery shoes
  • Wear clothing with suitable length
  • Wear non-slip shoes
8. Slippery floor
  • Take special care when walking outdoors
  • Walk close to the wall for support in case of need
9. Poor vision
  • Wear appropriate glasses
  • Hold handrail when climbing stairs
  • Do not carry too many things
10. Inappropriate use of walking aids Use walking aids correctly and seek professional advice if in doubt
