Chemical Assessment and Management Program (ChAMP)

The ChAMP Web site has been redesigned for easier navigation and to include new information and functions.

Highlights
View the chemicals for which EPA is developing RBPs (PDF) (5 pp., 26 KB, About PDF) and HBPs (PDF) (3 pp., 47 KB, About PDF)

Search for chemicals with completed risk- or hazard-based prioritizations by CAS number.

Submit comments on the prioritization process or on a chemical-specific prioritization.

Read the Methodology EPA uses to develop Risk-Based (PDF) (28 pp., 171 KB, About PDF) and Hazard-Based (PDF) (17 pp., 242 KB, About PDF) Prioritizations Under ChAMP

Read about stakeholder's input in developing the ChAMP Chemical Prioritization process.

As of March 2009, EPA has developed and posted risk-based prioritizations for 220 HPV chemicals and has posted hazard-based prioritizations for 83 chemicals. Read summaries of RBP (PDF), (9 pp., 56 KB, About PDF) and HBP (PDF), (4 pp., 32 KB, About PDF) decisions made by EPA to date.

The Chemical Assessment and Management Program (ChAMP) is broadening EPA's efforts to ensure the safety of existing chemicals. The program is developing screening-level hazard, exposure, and risk characterizations for an estimated 6,750 chemicals produced or imported in quantities of 25,000 pounds or greater a year.

Based on these assessments, EPA is prioritizing the chemicals to indicate whether additional data or control measures may be needed to address potential hazards and risks.

EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson has asked that EPA's Office of Prevention, Pesticides and Toxic Substances (OPPTS) develop options to ramp up efforts to assess, prioritize, and take action on existing chemicals, with particular emphasis on protecting children.

On this Website you will find:

Basic Information -- Read about ChAMP, including why it was developed and its chemical assessment and management activities.

About Chemical Prioritizations -- Read how EPA is preparing prioritizations to determine appropriate next steps for both High Production Volume (HPV) and for Moderate Production Volume (MPV) chemicals – those produced in quantities between 25,000 to 1 million pounds per year.

Chemical Prioritizations -- Access the Risk-Based and Hazard-Based Prioritization documents by searching by Chemical Abstract Service (CAS) registry number or chemical or chemical category name. Comments can also be provided to EPA from this web page.

Hazard Characterizations -- Read about and access hazard characterizations for HPV chemicals that were developed as an interim step in creating risk-based prioritizations.

TSCA Inventory Reset -- Read about EPA's effort to update and reset the TSCA Inventory to more accurately reflect the chemicals that are currently being used in commerce in the United States.

Inorganic HPV Challenge Program -- Read about the Agency's plan to develop and implement a phased, multi-year program for inorganic HPV chemicals that will provide the Agency, industry, and the public with more complete hazard information on inorganic HPV chemicals.

Related Programs -- Read about programs related to ChAMP, such as its precursors and those that have supplied its underlying elements, including the HPV Challenge Program, HPV Information System (HPVIS), and the Inventory Update Reporting (IUR) rule. Others include international programs such as eChemPortal, Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM), and Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of chemical substances (REACH).
