ChAMP Glossary

Chemical Category
A group of chemicals whose physical chemical and human health and/or environmental toxicological properties and/or environmental fate properties are likely to be similar or follow a regular pattern as a result of structural similarity (or other similarity characteristic).

Chemical Cluster
A group of chemicals whose structures are similar as determined by a chemical fragment-based matching algorithm.

Hazard-Based Prioritization (HBP)
The priority (high, medium or low) of a chemical or chemical category for follow-up action identified by EPA based on potential hazard(s). The screening-level HBP is based on the screening-level Hazard Characterization and existing regulatory or related information for the chemical or chemical category. More information on how EPA develops screening-level HBPs can be found in the Methodology for Hazard-Based Prioritization Under ChAMP (PDF) (17 pp., 242 KB, About PDF) .

High Production Volume (HPV) Chemicals
Chemicals manufactured (including imported) in the United States at quantities greater than or equal to 1 million pounds per year.

HPV Challenge Program
Under the HPV Challenge Program, EPA "challenged" companies to make health and environmental effects data publicly available on chemicals produced or imported in the United States in quantities of 1 million pounds or more per year. As of June 2008, companies have sponsored nearly 2,250 HPV chemicals, with nearly 1,390 chemicals sponsored directly through the HPV Challenge Program and approximately 860 chemicals sponsored indirectly through international efforts.

Inventory Update Reporting (IUR)
Under the IUR Rule, manufacturers and importers are required to report production volume information for chemicals produced in volumes of 25,000 pounds or more at a site and for chemicals produced or imported in volumes of 300,000 pounds or more at a site, manufacturers also report processing and use information.

Medium Production Volume (MPV) Chemicals
Chemicals manufactured (including imported) in the United States at quantities greater than 25,000 pounds and less than 1 million pounds per year.

Risk-Based Prioritization (RBP)
The priority (high, medium or low) of a chemical or chemical category for follow-up action identified by EPA based on potential risk(s). The screening-level RBP is based on the screening-level Hazard, Exposure, and Risk Characterization and existing regulatory or related information for the chemical or chemical category. More information on how EPA develops screening-level RBPs can be found at About Chemical Prioritizations and in the Methodology for Risk-Based Prioritization Under ChAMP (PDF) (28 pp., 171 KB, About PDF) .

Screening-Level Exposure Characterization (EC)
A qualitative characterization of the potential exposures associated with a chemical or chemical category. The screening-level exposure characterization is based on data gathered from the 2006 Inventory Update Reporting (IUR) and also use and exposure data found through searching a number of publicly available sources. More information on how EPA develops screening-level hazard characterizations can be found in the Methodology for Risk-Based Prioritization Under ChAMP (PDF) (28 pp., 171 KB, About PDF) .

Screening-Level Hazard Characterization (HC)
A qualitative characterization of the hazards associated with a chemical or chemical category. Screening-level HCs for HPV chemicals that were part of the US HPV Challenge or OECD HPV Programs are based largely on data gathered from the HPV Challenge Program for the internationally agreed Screening Information Data Set (SIDS), but also include hazard data found through searching a number of publicly available sources. More information on how EPA develops screening-level HCs can be found at About Chemical Prioritizations and in the Methodology for Risk-Based Prioritization Under ChAMP (PDF) (28 pp., 171 KB, About PDF) document. Screening-level HCs for MPV chemicals or HPV chemicals without a robust set of hazard information are based on hazard data found through searching a number of publicly available sources and EPA’s predictive models, were applicable. More information on how EPA develops screening-level HCs can be found in the Methodology for Hazard-Based Prioritization Under ChAMP (PDF) (17 pp., 242 KB, About PDF)

Screening-Level Risk Characterization (RC)
A qualitative characterization of the potential risks that may be associated with a chemical or chemical category. The screening-level RC reflects the integration of the screening-level exposure and hazard.
