USAID, Russian Orthodox Church to Partner on AIDS Care

The Russian Orthodox Church nursing staff presented the new palliative care program for terminal AIDS patients to USAID representatives earlier last week. Using ordained nuns as well as clinically training doctors, nurses, and volunteers, the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) is providing vital care through hospice programs and facilities in Moscow, Archangelsk, and Vologda. The UNDP-supported program, offering 24-hour domestic care to patients, also supports sufferers in Church-owned and operated facilities. This fiscal year USAID intends to launch a new partnership with the ROC and other Russian faith-based groups in five regions to provide support AIDS victims.
