Russian and U.S. Leaders Emphasize Cooperation on HIV/AIDS
From June 5-9, a delegation of senior Russian policy leaders, business executives and media representatives participated in U.S. study tour devoted to HIV/AIDS issues. The tour was partially funded by USAID and established a number of new and important partnerships between Russian and American government and business leaders. The delegation met with representatives from the White House, the Department of Health and Human Services, the State Department, the CSIS Second Wave HIV/AIDS Taskforce, the U.S.-Russia Business Council, the National Security Council and members of Congress. They were impressed with senior U.S. leaders’ high level of HIV/AIDS awareness, and their meetings emphasized that joint U.S-Russia efforts to fight HIV/AIDS are as important as any other global issue. The Russian leaders acknowledged that the only successful way to combat the HIV/AIDS epidemic is for business, media, government and NGO communities to act together with U.S. and other international partners. Besides meetings in Washington, the group visited the Beth Israel Medical Center Substitution Treatment Program in New York and took part in an event highlighting international HIV/AIDS cooperation featuring actor Richard Gere.
