Russia, U.S. Partner to Open New Tuberculosis Training Center
On August 27, 2007, the Central TB Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, with support from the World Health Organization (WHO) and USAID, opened a new demonstration center to train Russian health specialists on the most advanced methods of detecting and treating multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB). The Governor of Orel Oblast, Yegor Stroev, presided at the opening ceremony, praising the Federal TB Institute, WHO, and USAID for their long-standing support to the region.
While the number of MDR-TB cases continues to grow elsewhere in Russia, innovative USAID-supported TB-control programs have helped Orel cut its number of cases in half between 2003 and 2006. In 2006, Orel Oblast had an 81.2 percent TB treatment success rate, significantly higher than the national average of 57.2 percent.
