Campaign Emphasizes Personal Responsibility for Health

“Our Health is Our Responsibility” is a simple but powerful and important message - and one that recently was chosen as a slogan for Azerbaijan’s national health communication campaign. During a meeting convened by the USAID-supported Primary Health Care Strengthening (PHCS) project in November, national health officials along with members of the media, NGOs, and private sector representatives, gathered to plan strategic steps for the campaign, which will be launched in February or March 2007.

“This slogan reflects the importance of each individual’s responsibility for his own health as well as calling people to take action. Those who hear or read it won’t stay indifferent”- said Dr. Anakhanim Aliyeva, deputy director of the Centre of Hygiene and Epidemiology (CHE), and a member of the health communication working group established under the PHCS project.

Aliyeva says the working groups provide a valuable opportunity for diverse agencies to join together in sharing information and promoting healthy lifestyles. “What we are doing in collaboration with the PHCS project is very important. This is a unique opportunity for all of us to share an experience and to plan how to better achieve our goal,” she said.

Like other members of working group, Dr. Aliyeva participated in a number of events organized by the PHCS project, with the goal to improve national health communication capacity. She believes the chosen slogan will further that goal.

“The PHCS project is not here to tell Azerbaijani people what to do to stay healthy. Rather, it seeks to mobilize people for action to improve their own health and the health of their families,” she said.

The slogan was designed to convey the message that, while the government has a central responsibility to provide health services, individuals and families can also contribute in important ways to improve health outcomes in Azerbaijan.
