New Center Promises Expanded HIV/AIDS Services

On November 18, the American International Health Alliance (AIHA) and the St. Petersburg Medical Academy for Post Graduate Studies (MAPS) opened an AIDS Education and Training Center (AETC) in St. Petersburg.  Funded by USAID and important part of the Bratislava initiative, the AETC represents a key step in Russia’s efforts to create a health system to care for people living with HIV/AIDS.

The St. Petersburg AETC and its affiliated clinical sites will improve Russia’s institutional and human resource capacity to provide HIV/AIDS care and treatment. They will provide training for physicians, nurses, and social workers, healthcare policymakers, clinic administrators, psychologists, laboratory technicians, peer counselors and representatives of nongovernmental organizations in comprehensive care for people living with HIV/AIDS.

US Consul General Mary Kruger (center) congratulated the Russian and American colleagues on their collaboration in opening the AETC (from left: Nikolay Belyayev, Rector of the Medical Academy for Postgraduate Studies; Vladimir Zholobov, First Deputy of the St. Petersburg Health Committee; Mary Kruger, US Consul General; Jim Smith, Executive Director of the AIHA)
