A Warm Classroom for Winter

The local public school of Zorile, Moldova is home to 160 children between September and June every year. While the students of Zorile value their school and education, it can be quite cold during the winter months when average classroom temperatures do not exceed 50°. Since the gymnasium and school cafeteria are not heated at all, physical education classes are cancelled and the students are forced to eat their meals in the cold.

The culprit was the school’s unreliable and inefficient heating system. The Zorile school was faced with excessive costs for low quality of heating, low thermal efficiency, and periods without heat at all. With the assistance from the USAID Local Government Reform Project, the citizens of Zorile developed a strategic plan for social and economic development of their village, making renovation of the school heating system their top priority. USAID made a grant of $17,200 towards financing the project and $5,400 was contributed from local community of 1,600.

“East-west, my WARM school is the best!” cheers Ecaterina Tzurcan, an eight-grade pupil. With the new and efficient a heating system installed, conditions for the faculty and students will be much more pleasant this winter. For the first time in many years, the Zorile local public school will now have a healthy learning environment. “The result of this project is more than merely heating the school; it boosts our engagement in this institution, our hopes in better results—and more importantly, our children will be healthier,” said Liudmila Crudu, the school principal.

“Rather than being afraid of the winter season because of how cold we will be in school, we are looking forward to it,” comments Alexander Rosu, a seventh-grade pupil. “It will be really nice to come to school in the winter when it will be so warm inside the building.”
