What is it?
GED is an acronym for General Educational Development. It is a
series of tests that covers Language Arts (writing and reading), Social Studies,
Science, and Mathematics. GED Tests offer an opportunity to adults who, for
whatever reason, leave high school without graduating to earn the equivalent of
a high school diploma. In 2006, nearly one-half million people earned GEDs. To
receive a GED certificate, students who have dropped out of high school before
graduation must pass all five of the required tests in reading, writing, math,
science, and social studies. Successfully passing these tests certifies
attainment of the specified knowledge and skills required for postsecondary
education and training.
Is it the same as a diploma?
While the State of Nevada recognizes the GED, and issues a
high school equivalency certificate to those passing the tests, it is not a
diploma in our state. (Nevada does offer a diploma program to its adults through
the Adult High School Program.)
To receive a GED certificate, students who have dropped out of

postsecondary education and training.
Sixty percent of GED test takers state they plan on furthering
their education. Most colleges and universities admit GED graduates who meet
their other qualifications.
Most employers accept the GED certificate as equivalent to a
traditional high school diploma. Many employers are happy to accept the GED
certificate because the score sheet provides specific information as to the
skills mastered.
Is it available in languages
besides English?
Yes, there are seven versions of the GED test (English,
Spanish, French, Canadian, audio, large print, and Braille). Not all sites have
all the versions. You will need special permission to take the test in audio,
large print, or Braille, so make those arrangements well in advance of testing.
Are accommodations available
for disabilities?
Yes, if the disability is documented you may qualify for
accommodations. Please contact your local testing center for more information.
