Winter Season 2006-2007 Review
The Winter of 2006-2007 was a memorable one. After a couple of mild and uneventful winters, much of the Missouri Ozarks and southeast Kansas experienced heavy snow, damaging ice accumulations and periods of bitter cold. The exception was far south central and southeast Missouri where snow amounts were well below average. The Winter season started out with a major winter storm November 31 and December 1, 2006. This storm brought heavy accumulations of sleet and snow as well significant freezing rain to much of the area. Snowfall totals of 12 to 17 inches fell across portions of west central and central Missouri. Heavy sleet accumulations of 1 to 3 inches accumulated along the Interstate 44 corridor. The combination of the ice and snow weighted down all exposed objects and caused major damage from southeast Kansas into central Missouri. Many roofs on businesses, barns, outbuildings, and schools collasped due to the weight of the accumulated ice and snow. On Lake of the Ozarks and Pomme De Terre Lake, numerous docks collasped destroying a large number of boats and causing many of them to |
The great ice storm of January 12-14 2007 was one of the greatest disasters to ever impact southwest Missouri, including the Springfield metro area. Several counties, mainly along and north of the interstate 44 corridor, experienced ice accumulations up to two and a half inches. Power outages and catastrophic tree damage resulted from this historic event. At least 200,000 residents of southwest Missouri were left without power for up to three weeks. Estimated damage cost exceed three hundred million dollars. Take a look at more ice storm photos. A third winter storm impacted mainly areas of southeast Kansas into central Missouri January 20, 2007. Snow accumulations of 4 to 7 inches fell north of a line from Pittsburg Kansas to the Lake of the Ozarks. |
