USAID Supports Development in Rural Primorye
On November 28, 2008, a USAID representative visited the villages of Nagornoye and Pozharsky in the Pozharsky Raion of Primorye to learn about the impact of USAID’s Municipal Community Alliances Program, implemented by the Khabarovsk-based organization Green House. Civic leaders in Nagornoye shared their success in addressing local development problems. Last year, local residents joined together to build a fence around pasture in order to prevent personal property damage caused by cattle.
During the past year, residents combined efforts to improve the local water supply system. With USAID grant funds covering one-third of expenses, local groups collected additional funds from each house in the village (with most families offering 3,500-8,000 rubles) and secured 40,000 rubles from the Pozharsky Raion Administration to purchase and install a new water system. The head of the village council, Victor Savenko, said that whereas he used to work alone, as a result of the USAID project, he now has an active group of citizens that he can rely on when confronting local development needs.
