USAID-Supported Organization Takes Lead in Agricultural Law Public Discussions

Following the presidential elections in February, Turkmenistan’s new government announced plans for agricultural sector reforms and legal initiatives. In response, the USAID-supported Ilkinjiler Farmers’ Association immediately convened numerous farmers and other citizens’ meetings throughout one province, Mary Welayat, to discuss the draft laws. The association also met with their visiting Parliament member and presented verbal and written comments for consideration in developing the final version of the drafts. USAID supported the public discussion process by providing the association with information, office space, techniques and other resources.

The Ilkinjiler Farmers’ Association has built a successful track record for advocacy: previously, its outstanding efforts resulted in heightened implementation of the cotton sales law in Turkmenistan.
